Transit and Vanpool Fringe Benefit Limits Will Be the Same as Parking Benefit in 2016

On December 15, 2015, Congress passed the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2016 that has since been signed into law by President Obama.   This Act permanently matches the monthly level of transit/vanpool benefits to monthly tax benefits provided by employers for parking. With annual cost of living increases, the monthly limitation under § 132(f)(2)(B) regarding the fringe benefit exclusion amount for qualified parking is $255 in 2016.  The aggregate fringe benefit exclusion amount for transportation in a commuter highway vehicle and any transit pass is $255 per month.  Bicycle commuting reimbursement limitations remain at $20 per month. Updates to Best Workplaces for Commuters’ popular e-Brief on Commuter Benefits are underway.
