Assessing Rail and Bicycle Connectivity in Florida

Assessing Rail and Bicycle Connectivity in Florida is a statewide effort led by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Public Transit Office to evaluate and strengthen the connections between passenger rail systems and bicycle infrastructure. The project focuses on understanding how well Florida’s rail system is integrated with surrounding bike networks and identifying opportunities to improve access, safety, and usability for people who combine biking and transit.

By examining station-area conditions, network gaps, and user experience, the project highlights key barriers that often limit effective first- and last-mile connections, such as incomplete bike networks, lack of secure parking, and challenges navigating to and from stations. The findings provide a data-driven foundation to support better planning, investment, and policy decisions across the state.

A central outcome of the project is the Pedals to Platforms guide, which translates project insights into practical strategies and recommendations. The guide equips transit agencies, local governments, MPOs, and partners with tools to improve bike–rail integration through infrastructure enhancements, supportive policies, and coordinated planning approaches. Together, the assessment and guide advance FDOT’s commitment to building a more connected, multimodal transportation system; one that improves access to transit, expands mobility options, and supports safer, more sustainable travel throughout Florida.
