South Beach in Miami Beach, Florida has long been "electric," attracting world travelers and locals enjoying the exciting night life, sparkling surf and sand, Art Deco architecture, shopping or a glimpse of a celebrity, fashion film shoot and so much more. The new ELECTROWAVE electric shuttle bus system-- initiated on January 30, 1998-allows residents and visitors to more conveniently enjoy the South Beach area, while reducing traffic congestion, parking problems and air pollution. As of November 2002, the system successfully transported 4,200,000 passengers!

ELECTROWAVE is the first electric shuttle bus system in Florida. Electric vehicles were chosen because their cutting-edge transportation technology makes them the cleanest, quietest. cost-effective mass-transit alternative for South Beach. The fleet of eleven shuttles are moving works of art with murals and other designs across the vehicle's panels. The shuttles run north and south along one of South Beach's busiest corridors of shops, cafes, clubs and other hot spots and a short walk from world-famous Ocean Drive.

After extensive analysis of business activity, traffic patterns, parking availability, resident and visitor activities and preferences, the MBTMA and the City of Miami Beach developed the ELECTROWAVE through funding partnerships from Florida Department of Transportation, Florida Power and Light. Florida Alliance for Clean Technologies, Clean Cities, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI).

Each 22 foot bus was made by Advanced Vehicle Systems in Chattanooga, TN, and seats 22 with standing room for more passengers. The electric bus service is promoted by businesses along the route through bright, multi-colored, multi-lingual brochures. With the overwhelming success of the buses, local authorities are researching funding possibilities for more buses.

The average shuttle travels 29-30 miles on a single charge. All of the vehicles are air conditioned, have large unobstructed windows, cushioned wrap-around seating, music, and courteous drivers specially trained in customer service for the area.
